ExpandI am an Italian-American postgraduate student, currently studying 20th Century Literature. I graduated Newcastle University, where I majored in English Literature with a minor in Japanese, with First Class Honours. I am extremely passionate about English Literature and would love to help students who find themselves struggling with their exams or essay-writing. As a native Italian speaker, I am also happy to tutor anyone wanting to learn Italian, be they a novice or an advanced learner. At Newcastle University, I led small Italian conversation groups at beginner, intermediate and advanced level, so I have a wide range of expertise in tailoring to different levels. As Italian is not a widely spoken language, I am always incredibly excited to teach it!
I have a lot of experience tutoring adult students, especially in English as a Foreign Language. As an undergraduate, I taught English on a one-to-one basis to adult refugees from Sudan and Syria for four years, tackling anything from grammar, to speaking, to spelling and writing.
Finally, I have an advanced knowledge of Japanese, after having studied the subject for four years and spent a year abroad in Kyoto, and would be more than happy to help anyone on their journey towards mastering this difficult language.
I look forward to meeting you and helping you on your learning journey!

ExpandAbout Myself:
Bsc Physics with Theoretical Physics (First Class Honours) from Imperial College London studying towards an MSc in Theoretical Physics at the University of Edinburgh. I worked 2 years as a Junior Data Scientist for a world leading agro-tech company, Buhler UK Ltd. My hobbies are video editing, running and, more recently, animation.
My approach:
I firmly believe that students, whichever level their are at, can be brought to understand and be comfortable with mathematics and physics. The secret to achieving this is many hours of practice, and my role in achieving this goal is guidance and explanations. I enjoy immensely helping students draw the lines between what they already know and be comfortable with solving problems. The love for problem solving is what lead me into Theoretical Physics and I hope to share this excitement with you. As long as we stay on topic you can ask whatever question you have, no matter how silly you think it is (usually these are the most fun).
When tutoring I go for solving problems first and addressing theory whenever something does not make sense. If, before the session, you are not comfortable with the theory, I will cover it first and then solve problems together. However, for this to work well I would ask you to let me know before the session if you are comfortable with the theory.
At the end of each session I will leave you with exam style questions to be done before the next session. If there are problems with the Homework set, I am happy to help before the next session if you drop me a message.
Get in touch if you have any questions 🙂

ExpandHello! My name is Cameron and I’m a current postgraduate student at the University of Edinburgh. I graduated from Edinburgh this year with a degree in French and German and I have been teaching languages since my first year of study. I received a first-class honours degree with distinction in spoken French and German and class valedictorian medals in spoken German and German medieval literature. I also achieved 92% in spoken French. For one year of my undergraduate degree, I spent time at French and German universities, taking translation and literature courses made by native speakers, for native speakers. Alongside my teaching experience, I have also worked as a translator in various sectors. I shall be carrying on my studies with a masters in German literature under a scholarship.
One of the main reasons I have always loved teaching and learning languages is communication. It has always been a passion of mine to speak with others and see different points of view. Languages facilitate that beautifully; there are countless different ways of seeing the world and it is often a cultural background that informs those perspectives. It is often only via speaking a foreign language that we can see those different thoughts and ideas. Exposure to different cultural perspectives has rounded me as a human being and I am learning even more with every conversation.
It is precisely this ability that I want to give to my students. My teaching style focuses on two areas; teaching sound linguistic skills and then applying those skills beyond the grammar books to widen my students’ perspectives. In other words, I never teach grammar and stop there. I encourage my students at all levels to then use that linguistic ability and apply it to conversations, literature, and cultural thinking to improve their critical thinking, self-reflection and, above all, confidence in their abilities.
If any of this is something that would interest you or your child, then please do not hesitate to get in touch!

ExpandHello! My name is Jacob and I am recent graduate from the University of Edinburgh. I possess a Postgraduate Certificate in Acoustics and Music Technology and Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering.
As I have only recently left the school system myself, I have intricate knowledge of what examiners are looking for when it comes to giving good grades. If you were to choose me as a tutor, I would strive to give my tutees a deep understanding of their chosen subject. Rote learning may be sufficient to pass at school level, but understanding is required to achieve the top grades. Furthermore, a lack of understanding when entering university will seriously hinder a student’s ability to achieve at that level.
Therefore, I will strive to ensure that my tutees are not only given the ability to achieve good grades at school level, but are also set up for success at university and beyond.
I possess a passion for mathematics and physics and I adore making these subjects accessible and enjoyable to people who may not enjoy them initially. Many people don’t enjoy these subjects as they can be very abstract and hard to grasp. My focus will be to convey these subjects to students in a way that personally resonates with them.
In summary, my aim as a tutor is to provide an enjoyable educational experience that will provide students with a deep understanding and give them great success.

ExpandMy name is Zoe Scott and I’m a native English speaker from Ireland. I have bachelor’s degree in Interpreting and Translating with French and Spanish as well as a CELTA, IELTS Training, DELTA M1 and DELTA M3. As a teacher, that speaks 5 languages, I believe I’m incredibly open and communicative. Establishing trust and a channel of communication in the classroom adds more life and substance to our lessons where all student needs are met. I like to think of myself as sympathetic, and because I’d been in classes where I was far from challenged and excited, I take having fun in the classroom very seriously (paradoxical pun intended). I have extensive experience teaching both adults and children at different levels and age groups, so I come with a lot of resources, ideas, and activities that are fun, practice different sets of skills and sub-skills, and student-centered. Since I value learner autonomy and consistently promote it, I encourage my students to be open about their needs so our lessons would be as informative and efficient as possible.
I embarked on my EFL journey 4 years ago, and I decided it was the job for me. It all started in the South of Italy where I got the chance to teach both adults and children and knew I’d found my dream job. After a while, I knew I had to take my wanderlust and love for education elsewhere, so I hopped on a plane to Mexico and took my teaching a step further. In 2018, I landed a job with the British Council in Egypt, where I took my classroom experience and married it with pedagogy by doing vocational courses such as the TYLEC and DELTA M1. Aside from these courses, I did IELTS Teacher training, and Teaching English in the Early Years Classroom training. By the time I got to Spain, my thirst for knowledge was yet to be quenched, so I applied for DELTA M3 to keep myself intellectually stimulated during quarantine.
I’m curious, inquisitive, and constantly eager to experience more, learn more, and of course, teach more! Ireland was a tad too small for me, so I’ve always had the urge to travel the world. So far, I’ve taught in Mexico, Italy, Egypt, and Spain – where I currently reside. I have many creative hobbies such as reading, drawing, and photography, and a very special fascination with crime documentaries (perhaps I was a lawyer in my past life).

ExpandFor me, the best tutoring is that which delivers two main results: a robust subject knowledge and an enhanced ability to use that knowledge successfully. In other words, I believe that provision of raw information alone is insufficient to equip someone to respond to questions creatively and with distinction. For that reason, I work to ensure that tutees also gain a deep and functional understanding of the subject matter and that, through being challenged to think in new ways, they hone their critical thinking skills. Underpinning my practice in that regard is a wealth of knowledge and experience: I have a PhD in English Literature (University of Edinburgh); I have taught English and Scottish texts up to undergraduate level; and I have also worked as a writing advisor for postgraduate students. Uniting all of that, my overarching aim as a tutor is to enable individuals to both realise their full potential and gain confidence in their abilities.

ExpandHello everyone and it is a pleasure to meet you! My name is Matthew and I will be embarking on my PGDE course at Moray House this September, specialising in the teaching of Mandarin Chinese.
I have been fascinated with the Chinese language ever since I began learning it in secondary school, with me particularly being interested in the completely unique elements of the language in comparison to traditional romanised languages, as well as the entirely different language learning experience it brings for students in the West. I have also loved the idea of teaching and how students’ interactions with a single subject can be impacted by the actions and enthusiasm of a single person. It was my interest that eventually lead me to go into teaching.
I have spent the past two years developing my language teaching skills and building on my Chinese abilities while living abroad in China, teaching English (ESL) full-time in a variety of positions in Jiaxing, Beijing and Wuhan ranging from primary school level to college levels of education. As well as gaining an ESL qualification prior to teaching abroad, I was required to use a multitude of techniques to strengthen both the students’ English abilities and their confidence in using the language. This involved both in-person methods and remote teaching using technology.
Since returning to the UK, I have also been tutoring Chinese part-time to university students wishing to consolidate on the knowledge they had already gained from previous study using textbook materials.
When tutoring, I always wish to ease the divide between the tutor and the tutee. While learning a language can be very fun and rewarding for the learner, it can at times be incredibly challenging, especially if the target language vastly differs in grammar, structure, or script from their native tongue. I wish to create an environment where the learner can experience the language freshly while also experimenting and comprehending the language at a comfortable pace – after more than 10 years of language learning it is very likely that I will have already gone through all of the struggles that they come across!
Furthermore, I always try to find a link between different elements of a language to the learner’s own life experiences. Effective language acquisition is much more likely when the context and usage of the language point in everyday life is understood.
I am available to tutor in Mandarin Chinese (Simplified) at SQA National 4, National 5 and Higher levels.
I am also very happy to tutor students in English as a Second Language, whether it be for an official governmental certificate such as ESOL, or on a casual basis.

I am also involved in theatre production and academic dancing while focusing on the connection between media and art. My experience is focused on languages and their power in delivering certain messages. I have worked in a radio station, an online newspaper, a travel blog, an advertising agency, in theater production and in cinema. I decided to focus on education because I believe that we learn every single day and everyone should get the chance to progress in life through the help of the right tutor.
I helped many of my friends in written assignments and oral projects. I’ve also have been part of an international campaign where I was the team leader, budget controller and social media manager, in which we worked in an international environment to promote gender equality.
Being a native Arabic speaker while holding both a French and English education, gave me the knowledge to analyze these languages and to help others learn and communicate in three different languages.
It is important to see the differences of each culture, as through this we will be able to grow as a community. Each language, culture and text will enlighten us towards a better future and a vast knowledge that will change the world as we know it.

ExpandAfter a generic start in the field of foreign languages, my university career has increasingly focussed on
Italian teaching to non-Italian speakers. Already at the end of my BA in Foreign Languages and Literatures I
decided to concentrate on this specific subject and I wrote my thesis Class Interaction And Language
Fossilisation: A Case Study based on data I had personally collected. The success of the thesis and the level
of expertise I had acquired motivated me to seek a further specialization and I therefore applied for the MA
in Italian Language and Culture for Foreigners. During this two-year course, I was granted an Erasmus
allowance that entitled me to attend the academic year 2017-2018 at UCL (University College London) as an
exchange student. This period abroad deepened and enriched my understanding of the British approach to
language study as well as my personal interest in British culture. As I went back to Italy I graduated with a
thesis on the evolution of Italian language teaching in Italy, Past and Present of Scholastic Italian Through
the Analysis and Comparison of Students’ Compositions from 1948 and Today, again based on personally
collected data. After university, I pursued my studies in the field by obtaining a DILS Pg (2 nd level) certificate
in Italian language teaching.
Beside my academic career, I had the opportunity to enhance my practical skills by gaining
operational experience. From October 2012 to May 2015 I volunteered as an Italian language teacher for
small local associations as ALP and Meltin-PO operating in my home town, Prato, where the number of
migrants unable to afford a professional language course is considerable. Within these projects, I was
usually assigned to classes of young learners with an A1 level. In time, I gained autonomy both in class and
in programming. Another relevant experience was my MA curricular internship at the language school La
Bottega delle Lingue in Summer 2017. I spent the most part of my 180 hours there teaching Italian to
refugees with different levels of language (from beginners to A2), schooling and literacy. My main role
during the internship was the one of teaching assistant as I followed the programme of the appointed
teacher. However, by the end of my internship period I was occasionally asked to substitute some of the
teachers on holiday and/or prepare autonomously some classes under the supervision of the other more
experienced members of the school.
My first experience as a professional teacher consists in a regular full time contract for the
academic year 2018-2019 as a substitute teacher of English language and culture for the Italian public high
school Francesco Datini. The six classes I had been assigned to were all part of a schooling programme for
adults. This role allowed me, on one hand, to manage autonomously classes with a varied range of levels
and, on the other, to face a new typology of learners as English is, for most of my students that year, a
completely foreign language instead of a second one. Since the academic year 2019-2020 I have been
working as an Italian language assistant at Fettes College, in Edinburgh. During this time, I have contributed
to the preparation of the Upper and Lower Sixth forms towards their final exam for IB Italian Ab Initio. My
main role has been to prepare autonomously a programme of both one-to-one and pair lessons with the
aim of supporting the main course programme conducted by the Head of Italian, Mr. Coppola. This
experience with small groups and single students has allowed me to explore some more conversational
methods as well as the importance of more tailored approaches. Throughout the year, I have also taken
part to classes of the main course on a weekly basis, in order to enhance my experience of class
management through observation and participation. During the Covid19 lockdown, I have been given the
chance to keep working from home using programmes such as Skype for Business and Microsoft Teams.
I am convinced that further experiences as a language tutor and language teaching assistant in a
foreign environment represents the ideal continuation of my professional growth on many different levels,
allowing me to work with individuals from a different background than mine and to become familiar with
the different needs of different types of students. On one hand, dealing with pupils from the IB or IGSCE
both at school and with my tutees would keep me in touch with the official UK programmes and
requirements. On the other hand, independent learners or university students would allow me to
experiment on different topics. All my tutees would benefit from my experience and the units and
techniques developed in these years. I would also be happy to share some examples of authentic Italian
culture (music, films and novels) with those who might be interested.

ExpandI am a PhD student in astronomy/astrobiology at the University of Edinburgh with a BSc in environmental geoscience. I have 4 years experience in teaching and tutoring at university level and have run classes for primary and secondary students, public lectures, and have even taught prisoners. I tutor chemistry and biology and earth sciences at all levels.
My research area is in astrobiology which is a field aimed at looking at life in its cosmic context and I look at the potential for life on other planets. Astrobiology is a very interdisciplinary field and I hope to show you that the science you can learn in a classroom is used to search for life on other planets!
I believe science should be exciting and that the key to success in education often comes down to confidence. Confidence in the basic concepts of a subject provides the foundations for tackling more abstract areas. We will work together to make sure that you have not only the knowledge and appropriate tools, but also the confidence to achieve your goals.

postponed due to COVID19. I have been leading groups of children and coaching sports since I was
14. I have experience with special needs, as I have worked with children with ADHD, Epilepsy,
Autism, Dyspraxia, and Downs Syndrome. I love maths and history and am keen to help young
people understand them and enjoy them as subjects. My own teachers worked to teach me things in
a way I would understand when I struggled, and I believe it is important to invest that time for an
enjoyment of a subject to thrive. I have strong communication skills and a good sense of humour,
which gives me an ability to build a good rapport with young people, and I look forward to reaching
new milestones with the individuals I teach.

ExpandMy name is Robbie and I am from Inverness in the north of Scotland. I recently graduated from Law
and Spanish at the University of Edinburgh. My first teaching experience was in Chile with Project
Trust. I worked in a high school as a volunteer in Santiago, the capital, as an English Classroom
assistant for a year. This included my own extracurricular English Workshops. I was also involved
with lesson planning, activities in classes and classroom management. It was a great first teaching
experience for me as I was really chucked in at the deep end and I quickly got to grasps with the joys
and challenges of teaching. It was also a great way for me to learn Spanish.
When I returned from Chile and started studying in Edinburgh, I got a job working with Magikats as a
Maths and English tutor. This involved working with groups of up to 6 students at a time, from the
age of 3 to 16, assisting them with Maths and English school work. This was a different challenge to
the 40+ children in Chilean classrooms, but one I also enjoyed. During this job, I learned the different
aspects of the Maths and English curriculum in Scottish schools up to Nat 5 level.
Since then I have had various private lessons as a tutor teaching English with Adults and Children in
Barcelona, as well as private Spanish lessons here in Scotland. I believe because my teaching
experiences have been so varied, I am able to adapt with ease to suit the needs of the student.

ExpandHi! I am Joy, currently an undergraduate student studying towards Accounting
and Finance degree at the University of Edinburgh, last year I went on
exchange in Canada with McGill University.
Since high school, I have had volunteer teaching experiences in South Africa to
grade 11 and 12 students, I have also been offering private tutoring to students
for GCSE courses, such as Mathematics, English literature, Business Studies,
Economics, Computer Science and Accounting.
I believe that tutoring should be a personalized experience, therefore I would
adjust my teaching style based on the learning style of my student. My tutorials
usually begin with a comprehensive general explanation of the area at hand,
this will then be complimented by completing example questions and relating
to real life uses, to enhance depth of understanding. I will also provide
suggestions regarding revision techniques and area for improvement.
My academic background coupled with my teaching experiences since high
school makes me a particularly knowledgeable tutor. I am passionate to be able
to help students with their courses, by passing on the knowledge I have learnt,
and offering advice on how to revise. I hope that my sessions will leave my
students feeling confident and proficient in their chosen subject.
I look forward to meeting you!

ExpandHello everybody!
My name is Natacha and I come from Madrid. I am a native speaker of Spanish, plus a
certified teacher of Spanish as a foreign language. In addition, I am an examiner of
DELE A1-A2 Cervantes Institute, so I am well qualified to assist you in passing those
exams.
My experience with people of different nationalities helps me to be more competent to
teach beginners to advanced and indeed, all ages too. You all learn in a different way, so
we quickly adapt the lesson to suit the pace of each student. Nobody will be left
floundering!
My main aim is to help pupils improve their Spanish skills in a fun and enjoyable way.
You would need to put in a lot of hard work, of course, but almost without being
conscious of this because you are doing and having fun at the same time.
I am a patient and empathetic person, a learner of languages myself, so fully aware of
the effort required to master a new language. You will feel comfortable and confident
improving with me.
Student feedback is very important, enhancing meaningful communication, so helping
to provide the correct teaching method, with tailor made materials along the journey.
Grammar would be taught in an enjoyable way, not the old-fashioned, boring methods
once used. My classes are structured and articulated by different topics and focus
mainly on improving oral interaction and listening comprehensions too.
My interests include learning languages, volunteering in all sorts of different ways and I
love hiking. This keeps me fit, optimistic and genuinely positive towards all aspects of
life. I am passionate about my profession and that makes all the difference. I enjoy all
things British and visited Scotland not so long ago, a beautiful country so I am moving
to Edinburgh soon.
I would be delighted to be your ideal tutor and hope to see you soon.

ExpandI am a recent Sociology graduate offering private tuition to students of History and Modern Studies up to the Advanced Higher level, as well as to pre-Honours Sociology Undergraduates.
I have a First-Class Master of Arts with Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Edinburgh. Alongside my main degree subject, I have also completed Honours-level courses in Politics, History, Anthropology, and South Asian Studies.
My teaching is particularly focused on essay and exam techniques and improving the writing and argumentative skills of students. Much of my experience in this regard comes from my tenure as an Editor for the Leviathan Journal of Social and Political Sciences, a journal aimed at supporting young students writing about political issues.
This work involved close collaboration with individual students, maintaining a mentor-mentee dialogue, and a meticulous attention to detail when providing advice on the students’ essay writing and research skills. Several students whose work I had edited informed me that their writing skills and course grades had subsequently improved as a result.
My passion for helping young people reach their full potential when learning about complex social issues goes back to my own time in high school. Modern Studies and History were my favourite subjects, and in my last year of school I volunteered my free time as a classroom assistant to a class of pre-National 5 Modern Studies pupils. Helping these pupils to grasp multifaceted and adult issues, and to articulate their understanding through writing, gave me the inspiration to help other learners find the same passion for these subjects that I have.
I hope to inspire this same enthusiasm for these subjects in my students, and to help them learn skills which will be invaluable in exams and beyond.
